Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge fan of Friends myself but I'm an even bigger fan of HIMYM. For the right reasons. Though the constant rumble might go on between these two amazing shows, I'm gonna be breaking down points on why I think HIMYM is way better than Friends. Let's begin.
1. The Inside Jokes Are A Constant
HIMYM has jokes that have been made in the first season that last throughout the entire show that have had the same effect even in the final season. The show has a very intelligent set of jokes that has carried the show forward by making the audience feel like they're literally chilling out with them. It basically has an interactive aspect to it.
2. The Show Has A Great Narrative Angle
If you've noticed, the entire show is basically a narration of how Ted meets his kid's mom so the entire show basically unfolds episode by episode and makes the audience feel like they're a part of the narration, as in Ted is literally telling us how he meets thy he mother. Friends doesn't exactly have that, you can literally watch Season 4 Episode 9 randomly and you'd still catch up. However, HIMYM is entirely a storyline which makes it 10x interesting.
3. Introduction Of New Characters
Every new character that has been introduced in the show has had an impact on one of the main characters one way or the other which affects the main character's character development in the future seasons. It's not just a random introduction of characters, it's a story on its own.
4. Real Character Development
The entire show revolves around the character development of its main characters. Every single character in the show has a development, in one way or the other.HIMYMuses its nine seasons to help its characters evolve. Barney starts as a notorious womanizer and ends up a protective father. Robin goes from obscure field reporter to lead anchor to morning talk show host. Also, Ted finally stops being sodamn whiny. Lily and Marshall become wonderful parents to two kids.
5. Real Life Scenarios
Friends has a few real life issues like Rachel trying to make it out on her own in the real world with a job as a waitress to being a high end designer in the fashion world but most of it remains light hearted. However in HIMYM, the show revolves around real life scenarios and how you should deal with them. Its not all fun and hilarious, it also shows the deeper end to someone's life.
The death of Marshall's father is heart-wrenching, especially the last bit of the voicemail, which we only discover at the end. It's almost matched by the scene when Lily abruptly leaves. The way Marshall heals from both his father's death and his first breakup appears extraordinarily fleshed-out and realistic.
